Hiking in the Almtal valley at Kasberg,
in Grünau im Almtal and at Almsee

NEW: Outdoor puzzle app on the Kasberg Almrunde trail !

Hiking paradise Almtal

With over 150 hiking trails currently available in and around the Almtal valley, outdoor enthusiasts will find countless opportunities: Grünau im Almtal has become a popular hiking center in Upper Austria. At the same time, Grünau im Almtal is considered a hidden gem by those in the know for gentle and rewarding hiking in the Salzkammergut region. The Almtal valley, with its pristine natural surroundings, is rightly regarded as one of the most beautiful valleys in the Eastern Alps. The water and mountains are breathtakingly beautiful in every season.

Grünau im Almtal: Hiking makes the difference

Special features of the Grünau hiking centre in the Almtal valley

  • Kasberg as a family hiking area in the Almtal valley and as a panoramic summit with 360° views (Kasbergalm circular hiking trail)

  • Kasberg hiking destinations are suitable for children and offer plenty of adventure.

  • Hochberghaus with its family-run alpine pasture at 1200m is a comfortable mountain resort in a quiet location, surrounded by mountain nature, offering a nature experience for children in every season.

  • Hiking around the Almsee (circular hiking trail and variations thereof)

  • Hiking trails to and from mountain huts and lodges: Hochberghaus Resort, Sepp Huber Hütte, Almtaler Haus, Steyrer Hütte, Welser Hütte, Pühringer Hütte and many more

  • Hiking trail stages along the Alm river (e.g. to Scharnstein and beyond)

  • Multi-day hiking trails such as the Salzkammgut Trail (including variants)

  • Hiking to Offensee (trail #420) and to Ebensee

  • Hiking to Lake Laudach and to the Grünberg near Gmunden (trail #419), near the Traunstein mountain

  • Hiking with special nature experiences (Cumberland Wildlife Park and WALDNESS activities)

Planning the hikes

The excellent planning of the hikes and the clear signage of the trails are particularly noteworthy. The hiking stages are so numerous and varied that hikers can still reach the heart of nature in just 15 minutes from the easily accessible points (Almtal Bahn train stops, Kasbergstraße (Farrenau) to the Hochberghaus, Almsee parking lot at the Seegasthof). Furthermore, many hikes can be perfectly combined with return transport via public transport or the Traunstein taxi service.

With its many bodies of water, the Salzkammergut region, including the Almtal valley, offers true natural gems, such as the two Ödsee lakes and the Almsee lake, which are in no way inferior to the Langbathsee lakes near Ebensee. Unlike the cable car to the Grünberg mountain, the view from the Kasberg mountain, starting from the Hochberghaus mountain hut, is an even more rewarding hiking experience. Those who wish can use Grünau im Almtal, a village officially designated as a "mountaineering village," as a starting point for hiking in the Totes Gebirge mountain range.

Hiking on the Kasberg in the Salzkammergut

The Kasberg (1743 m) in Grünau im Almtal, a hiking area and destination, combines paths and trails from all directions. Scenic circular trails for easy hikes are also available, with the Hochberghaus as the starting and finishing point for a relaxing holiday in nature.

The Kasberg as the main peak and the Spitzplaneck as a worthwhile secondary peak offer beautiful views over the valley and into the mountains.

The view from the Kasberg stretches in all directions, like a sunny balcony: over the Alpine foothills and Innviertel to the Bavarian Forest, into the Mühlviertel and the Ötscher, the Dachstein, the spectacular backdrop of the Totes Gebirge, the Traunstein and the Höllengebirge, the Phyrgas, the Gesäuse and many other regions.

Kasberg: Hiking increases recovery

Guests of the Hochberghaus enjoy views of the Almal, the Traunstein Mountains, and the distant horizon from the sun terrace. Those who escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life will find the Hochberghaus on the Kasberg mountain perfect for their holidays: a "perfect world" setting above everyday life. The atmospheric sunrises and sunsets will be forever remembered.

After an active day outdoors, the Hochberghaus offers a delightful highlight: a meal from the in-house kitchen, steeped in regional traditions, and a visit to the forest sauna (Finnish/herbal sauna, infrared cabin, relaxation area). The educational WALDNESS additional offerings and the many interesting exhibitions in the Salzkammergut region, a Capital of Culture, enrich every day of your chosen vacation.

Kasberg via Hochberghaus

Easy mountain hike on forest roads and a well-marked path; a short exposed and secured area requires surefootedness and a head for heights. Difficult orientation in fog in the summit area!
