Hiking in the Almtal, at the Almsee
and in Grünau im Almtal

NEW: Outdoor puzzle app on the Kasberg Almrunde !

Almtal hiking paradise

With currently over 150 hiking routes throughout the Almtal Valley, there are countless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts: The village of Grünau im Almtal has become a popular hiking hub in Upper Austria. At the same time, Grünau im Almtal is considered an insider tip for gentle and adventurous hiking in the Salzkammergut. With its unspoiled natural beauty, the Almtal Valley is rightly considered one of the most beautiful valleys in the Eastern Alps. The water and mountains are stunningly beautiful in every season.

Grünau im Almtal: Hiking makes the difference

  • The special features of the Grünau hiking center include

  • Hiking around the Almsee (circular trail and variations)

  • Kasberg as a hiking arena and as a viewing summit with 360° views (Kasbergalm circular hiking trail)

  • Hiking trails to and from huts and mountain houses: Hochberghaus Resort, Sepp Huber Hut, Almtaler Haus, Steyrer Hut, Welser Hut, Pühringer Hut and many more

  • Hiking trail stages along the Alm river (e.g. to Scharnstein and further)

  • Multi-day hiking trails such as the Salzkammgut Trail (including variants)

  • Hiking to Offensee (trail #420) and Ebensee

  • Hiking to Lake Laudach and Grünberg near Gmunden (trail #419), near Traunstein

  • Hiking with special nature experiences (Cumberland Wildlife Park and WALDNESS activities)

Planning the hikes

The easy planning of the hikes and the well-marked trails are particularly noteworthy. The hiking stages are so numerous and varied that hikers can still be immersed in nature in just 15 minutes, starting from the convenient access points (Almtal Bahn train stops, Kasbergstraße (Farrenau) to the Hochberghaus, and the Almsee parking lot at the Seegasthof). In addition, many hikes can be perfectly coordinated with return transport by public transport or the Traunstein taxi.

With its numerous bodies of water, the Salzkammergut also offers true natural gems in the Almtal valley, such as the two Ödseen lakes and the Almsee lake, which are in no way inferior to the Langbathseen lakes near Ebensee. Unlike the cable car up the Grünberg, the view from the Kasberg is an even greater hiking experience from the Hochberghaus. Those who wish can use the destination Grünau im Almtal, fittingly known as a "mountaineering village," as a starting point for hiking in the Totes Gebirge mountains.

Hiking on the Kasberg in the Salzkammergut

The Kasberg (1743 m) in Grünau im Almtal, a hiking area and destination, combines paths and trails from all directions. Scenic circular trails for easy hikes are also available, with the Hochberghaus as the starting and finishing point for a relaxing holiday in nature.

The Kasberg as the main peak and the Spitzplaneck as a worthwhile secondary peak offer beautiful views over the valley and into the mountains.

The view from the Kasberg stretches in all directions, like a sunny balcony: over the Alpine foothills and Innviertel to the Bavarian Forest, into the Mühlviertel and the Ötscher, the Dachstein, the spectacular backdrop of the Totes Gebirge, the Traunstein and the Höllengebirge, the Phyrgas, the Gesäuse and many other regions.

Kasberg: Hiking increases recovery

Guests of the Hochberghaus enjoy views of the Almal, the Traunstein Mountains, and the distant horizon from the sun terrace. Those who escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life will find the Hochberghaus on the Kasberg mountain perfect for their holidays: a "perfect world" setting above everyday life. The atmospheric sunrises and sunsets will be forever remembered.

After an active day outdoors, the Hochberghaus offers a delightful highlight: a meal from the in-house kitchen, steeped in regional traditions, and a visit to the forest sauna (Finnish/herbal sauna, infrared cabin, relaxation area). The educational WALDNESS additional offerings and the many interesting exhibitions in the Salzkammergut region, a Capital of Culture, enrich every day of your chosen vacation.
